INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
social studies is the integrated study of multiple fields of social science and the humanities, including history, culture, geography, and political science. The term was first coined by American educators around the turn of the twentieth century as a catch-all for these subjects, as well as others which did not fit into the traditional models of lower education in the United States, such as philosophy and psychology (David, 2018). One of the purposes of social studies, particularly at the level of higher education, is to integrate several disciplines, with their unique methodologies and special focuses of concentration, into a coherent field of subject areas that communicate with each other by sharing different academic “tools” and perspectives for deeper analysis of social problems and issues (Larson, 2017). Social studies aims to train students for informed, responsible participation in a diverse democratic society. The content of social studies provides the necessary background knowledge in order to develop values and reasoned opinions, and the objective of the field is civic competence
This definition however does not indicate the level of education at which the title should be used.
The difference in title is a matter of sentiment which does not in any way determine the content of the courses at the various levels of education.
Under the new system in education, these subjects are not studies in isolation in the junior secondary school. As a result of this problem, there has been less interest and motivation on the part of the students who offer social subjects in schools.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
Social education in Nigeria is at its developmental stage at the initial introduction of this course into our education system there was no interest nor motivation from the government. According to Nsofor (1979) “The government was not only uninterested in including commercial subjects in the educational curriculum it made a deliberate and calculated attempt to frustrate the efforts of come of the philantiopicts”. Due to lack of attention which social education received at the introduction stage, efforts by the private proprietors no attention to crumple down. The proprietors gave no attention to the training of social studies teachers. This may be due to professional complications and financial burden which were not within their reach.
It is discouraging to note that despite all the problem social education faces at the earlier stage and the opportunities at had offended to the country, much has not been done to improve the situation. Schools, students still today lack qualified business teachers which may be as a result of the period of former inadequate when compared with the complexities and dynamic nature of knowledge required. A major problems that face social education today is lack of equipment which are very necessary for proper mastery of the subject. As a result of these problems, there has been less interest and motivation on the part of the students who offer social studies in school.
Another problems which will inhibit a smooth teaching of social studies in primary school is lack of libraries. The important of which cannot be over emphasized nor will not occupy lengthy discussion in this work..

social studies in Nigeria is at it development stages.
At the limited introduction of this course into our educational system. There was no interest nor motivation from the government.
According to Nsofor (1979) “The government was not only uninterested in including commercial subjects in the educational curriculum. It made a deliberate and calculated attempts fir frustrate the effort of some of the philanthropists.

CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDING
The following findings were based on the analysis of data collected.
- That lack of teachers in social study subjects is the major problem in teaching of social studies in primary schools.
- That lack of teaching learning equipment like type computers and other device used in teaching social studies contribute to the problems and prospects of teaching of social studies subjects show lack of interest in
- that students show lack of interest in some social studies imposing problems in the teaching of the subject.
5.2 CONCLUSION
From the study of the problems and prospects of teaching of social in primary schools with particular reference to the selected primary schools. It is clear that if enough teachers of social studies are being posted to government owned and private owned primary schools in Nigeria, it will eliminate the problems of teaching of social studies in primary schools.
This could be done effectively by the state school boards or any employment agency in charge of posting teachers to schools.
Distribution of subjects taught by individual teacher affect the number of teachers in the field of social studies. Sometimes, one teacher may be handling students from class one to five in social studies, in a day before he will finished teaching about three classes, the teacher, no matter how strong must become exhausted as a result, he will not be able to teach the remaining classes thereby leaving the students less busy.
Question nine in the questionnaire proved that social studies equipment are insufficient in schools. The researcher feel it is necessary to investigate more into this effect.\
Further more, the researcher verified that lack of qualified teachers affects the number of teachers posted in primary schools. It is clear that many people run away from these course as they read to be qualified as teachers in this subject. It was the expectation of the curriculum of social studies that there should be a minimum of six social studies teachers in each primary school. The achievement of the promising objective of the system is determined by the extent to which the teachers are effective in teaching the course in primary schools. Hence the teachers are the pivot of the whole system without them, the objective cannot be achieved.
The researcher want further to relate that these teachers cannot do without using materials and human assistance available in the community.
These humans assistance refers to the management. The management should assist the teachers in many ways, for instance, paying them as and when due so as to get all they want from the teachers.
It was clearly stated that students lack interest on some social studies subject, due to some internal and external factors. These factors include time allotted to those courses the teachers methodology and the impressio-that some of the courses are very difficult.
Secondly, some teachers use methods that make this subject uninteresting for instance some topics in social studies are more of practical, for that reason, it does not require much theoretical teaching.
The researcher verified that some students have the impression that some of the subjects in business studies are difficult for someone to choose as a career. These are some of the things that made them absent themselves from classes especially when these courses are going on.
5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS
In order to revamp this ugly trend, the researchers are recommending that:
- The state federal government should encourage and increase the number of new in-takes into the course of social studies in facilities of education, colleges of education are other institutions of higher learning where social studies is offered.
- qualified social studies teachers should be employed from any state of the federation.
- efforts should be made to motivate students interest by organizing seminars and work shops
- the government should dispatch essential equipment such as computers and other materials necessary for the teaching of all social studies subject in Nigeria.
- social studies should be made a compulsory subject in our primary schools.
