ABSTRACT

Architecture and art Design and the process of making works of art surround us in our everyday lives. Design has become more a part of the mainstream culture as quality design ideas reach the masses. From television shows about design to Target stores that utilize quality designers to design their products, people are realizing the benefits of good design in their everyday lives. As architects there is a responsibility to respond to this trend through future design decisions. Architects use technology to create works of art. Objectives of this thesis include: creating and defining space through artistic endeavors that shape the architecture; make the impossibility within art possible through architectonical means; to reveal the opportunities and languages of art that have an influence on architectural design; creation unrestrained by the logical thought of the architect and at the same grounded by what sets it free; freedom from the functional and programmatic constraints that are placed on space and form. A reciprocal relationship between the architectural design and the artistic work is the basis of the thesis. The intention is to discover artistic moments that breathe life into the architectural design process and add to the design.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                                INTRODUCTION

1.1                                                   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There is no doubt that all tangible visual arts share the same principles and elements of design. The world we live in is full of artifacts to make these artifacts they must first be designed. Creative design held in great esteem, one should have in-depth knowledge about design cognition and the cognitive abilities and strategies that contribute to creative design thinking. (Encyclopedia of creativity)

In architectural design, Design process is the most important than a final product so process should be well equipped to help student to arrive at a positive result which will fulfill all the criteria of aesthetic, functional and social parameters.

Design Process should be inculcated from the beginning of first year. In first year, they get introduced to a subject called design where they learn about element and principles of design, creative techniques. In first year they learn to design a space. Their primary concern is to create three dimensional structures of space and form to accommodate human activity.

After introducing elements and principles, Creative Technique of Abstraction is introduced to First year student.

Description of Abstraction: Mans relationship of art and architecture has always been through nature, starting with the cave man and progressing throughout the history of mankind. Abstraction process gives a way to see nature and how to extract beauty for art and architecture. The process is based on spirit of nature and how to interpret the shapes of flowers, trees, rivers, mountains or any natural thing for design inspiration. Art is an abstraction. Architecture is an art. Architecture is an abstraction. Architecture is an abstraction of nature. (Milton Stricker- 2010)

The purpose of abstraction is to simplify nature, to extract primary logic for design expression. Through abstraction, the complex power of natural phenomenon can be stripped down, simplified studied and shifted into dynamic design possibilities. The artist first distinguishes phenomena, or the appearance of things, and then through intuition recognizes design ideas. By a method of seeing, visualizing, sketching, and abstracting, the process continues, in a series of stages, to extract a basic “design element.” The continuance of the abstraction stages lead to two basic design directions.

  • The first design direction leads to an abstracted design element for two-dimensional
  • The second design direction extends the abstraction process to a higher level for architecture and three- dimensional

These two design possibilities start from nature, but each stage in the process leaves nature further off; just as a body might die, the spirit lives on. In the design process, the more repetitions, the further one gets from nature. In the end, there is not much left of nature, but what is left is the spirit, the very source. The power of abstraction proceeds from the spirit of nature, to the creativity of the human mind, and finally to an art form.

Abstraction receives its power through suggestive ideas triggering our imagination, leading to inspiration, which occurs during the abstraction process. To some, this is brain- storming, and it includes imagination, intuition, and inspiration, each having its own place in the abstraction process. Inspiration gives organic design its psychological and artistic power. The suggestive power of imagination can be positive or negative. It is one of the most powerful forces in the world, producing myths, religions, art, architecture, peace, cold wars, hot wars, and oil wars. The value of abstraction lies in its ability to evoke creative ideas, to inspire open-minded thinking and to stimulate the imagination, generating creative energy. Imagination enables the designer to arrive at endless design concepts, which are unpredictable, individual, and creative, leading to original art structure.

1.2                                                         PROBLEM STATEMENT

After World War II, humanity needed designers on a scale more grand than ever before. Much of Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean were in need of rebuilding after being bombed virtually to rubble. And it wasn’t just the buildings and city streets that needed help. A human populace devastated by years of depression, famine and war needed new everything: housing, clothes, transportation, tools, furniture, public gathering spaces, telecommunications devices, and on and on.

The world’s industrialization capacity was at an all time high thanks to mobilization for the war, and society’s applied artists found unprecedented opportunities to redesign what would become the new world, and help bring culture back from the brink. Applied artists like architects, furniture designers, fashion designers, automobile designers and industrial designers dove head first into practicality, creating products that could be mass-produced efficiently and cater to the widest possible consumer base.

1.3                                                          AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim is to study the influence of abstract art on modern architectural design which will at the end develop keen observation and presentation power in students. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To simplify nature, to extract primary logic for design expression
  2. To convert architectural imagination into a reality
  • To advocate a comprehensive and inclusive education in the visual arts.
  1. To describe the various uses of abstraction in the process of designing architecture

1.4                                                         RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. How has abstract art influenced the modern world?
  2. How does art influence the process of design in architecture?
  3. Can architects and artists work together to develop ideas?
  4. How does art in the process of design inform the architectural project?
  • What did abstract art influence?
  • How does abstract art influenced the society?
  1. How is abstract art used today?

1.5                                                           SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This work is on the influence of a abstract art in modern architectural design. Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. Abstract art is applied to modern architectural design uses forms, such as geometric shapes or gestural marks, which have no source at all in an external visual reality. This thesis focused on the influence of abstract art on modern architectural design.

1.6                                                     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The only problem noticed during the course of carrying out this work was difficulty in laying hands of useful information regarding this work in that there few authors that has written and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.

1.7                                                   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Abstraction refers to how far removed something is from that which it represents.  This research work will throw more light various ways in which designers can be said to move from abstract to actual in modern architectural design. Also, this study will also serve as a useful piece of information for both artists and architects.
