Description

  • ABSTRACT

Institutional building design is a complex process which includes numerous steps from the concept development to the design realization. Numerous factors affect the design of interior architecture of a space. One of the basic quality factors of a realized interior design is colour.

Complex nature of colours and their impact on the institutional has been often studied. Colour is observed as a fundamental quality of our visual perception. There are numerous developed theories and assumptions related to the esthetic comfort offered by colours, and to their effect on human psyche.

The paper addresses the importance of colours in the institutional building design. This includes housing buildings, but also public building educational institutions. The importance of usage of specific colors in day and night zones of housing areas is analyzed. The experiments conducted in this field, showing the wide range of effects in various aspects of human life are considered.

Based on the analysis of the conducted experiments, conclusions are drawn about the implementation of colours in the public areas interior. Their effects on performance and efficiency of student work in schools have been shown.

The goal of the paper is analyzing role of colors used in an interior on the users of the corresponding area.

  • 1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This research focuses on the role of colour of paint as a finishing on the institutional buildings in Nigeria

The project is obtained in two perspectives. Firstly, it deals with paint as a material used for decoration, protection, prevention and for the essence of befitting institutional buildings. It is also deals with common colour of paint types in use. The direction of painting (paint scheme) and the proper tools for the application. The study further analyse the problems of painting under the tropical condition of high humidity, heat, temperature and sunlight.

Secondly, it deals with the colour of the paints, need for colour treatment for any architectural space, which must serve a particular function of such space particularly on a stimulating colours for leaning in an academic buildings.

The influence of colour on humans as it is related to learning, impact of colour wheel including psychological effect of colour. The research shows that colour is personal with some basic rules which if observed, will result in an acceptable colour schemer which provide guidelines for designing and decorating successfully with colour (paints).

This work recommends diverse methods of painting using simple colour to show the effect of its view on volume, sensitive weight, height and distance.

The research work is equally moderated and shows the effect of paint on academic buildings of higher learning, its impact on the environment, durability and how to satisfy the building. Today, in the academic environment, which is the main focus of the research work, there is an increasing interest in the use of paint, yet little or no consideration is given to the psychological applications of colours to be used for painting.

Paints still remain the major material used for the decoration and protection of a building throughout its life span if used properly and treated in the most appropriate way.

1.2                                                       PROBLEM STATEMENT

It is very displeasing and disheartening, that paints are poorly used and even where used, poorly maintained thereby making the overall appearance of the area where it is used, uninteresting. It is therefore in view of this fact that the research intends to look into the problems facing the effective use of paint.

  • 3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The main aim is to create a platform of achieving an academic excellence through the   use of paints on institutional buildings, problems associated with its use and basic understanding by its effectiveness and psychological effects on students in higher institution of leaning.

The objectives are the follows;

  • To study the role of colours on institutional building.
  • To show the need for painting buildings and the basic rules of paint
  • To give a word of advice by way of recommendations on how to choose paint type and colour to enhance an academic excellence when painting institutional
  • To outline the various ways that paint affects students
  • To highlight the various factors that determines the functional value of paints when applied to institutional

1.4                              JUSTIFICATION OF RESEARCH WORK

In any research work or project of this magnitude, nature and importance, there are always bound to be justifiable reasons for the topic chosen. Issues must have arisen that necessitated such a decision to reflect and finally critically carry out a research on a particular topic.

As a researcher, the major motivating factor that aroused my inner mind into the world of paints was basically carefree attitude of each of the authorities of the tertiary institution in the country and even the architects working on academic buildings

It thus motivated me to research into reason why academic buildings are not responding to enthusiasm and academic functions through the use of colours, the availability and cheapness of paints to decorate and protect buildings as well as ways in which construction cost can be reduced to achieve a good paint scheme on buildings. In the light of the above discussion, the role of colour in institutional building was discussed.

1.5                                                 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work will be of great importance to individuals or  group of individual that want to undertake paint application.

It will also be of advantage to researcher or students undertaking a report or write up as a reference work on paint and paint application.

This research would finally improve and advance the researcher knowledge of the use of paint in institutional building.

  • 6 SCOPE OF STUDY

The scope of the study covers the role of paint as a finishing material in the institutional buildings. The relationship between an academic building and the modality for painting will be used to effectively analyse the impact of colour and painting on students of higher learning.

Moreover, this research work focuses on paints, why it should be used, how it should be applied and where it should be used. It talks about special paints for other aspects of the effective use of paint will also be discussed. Finally alternative to paint would also be proffered.

1.7                                                  LIMITATION OF STUDY

As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time Constraint:   The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

  • 8 RESEARCH METHODOLGY

A research work or study of this nature, for environment where most buildings, family residential houses construction of very minimal traditional building material and where innovations are being brought into construction to suit changing demands due to development, but to development, but with a very high percentage of illiteracy, will rely on the study of relevant data and adoption.

In this light, the methodology of this research involves the following;

  • References made to previous job carried out on the use of paint and available materials on building paints.
  • Participatory observation and people’s opinion on the choice of paint and their response to paint
  • The methodology also will includes simple experiment to show the effect of colour perception on volume; Its sensitive weight and its distance and
  • 9 DEFINITION OF SOME RELEVANT TERMS

Since the aim of any researcher is not to confuse the reader, it is only necessary to define certain terms as they are applied in the research.

These terms include the following:

Decorative effect: – The connotation decorative effect implies- putting into service anything that can or does produce an effect of aesthetics /beauty and causes a desired result.

Paints: – In building, a pigment, usually colour mixed with oil and applied to a wall surface as a preservative or for decorative purposes. This paint is a substance consisting of finely powdered insoluble materials, chiefly pigment, suspended in a liquid building medium, which is applied in a paste or liquid form on surface and which when exposed to air or under the influence of heat, has the power of changing into a dry adherent film.

Paint is generally made up of four constituents namely; pigment, binder or medium, thinner and drier.

Pigment: – An insoluble colouring substance, usually in powdered form, which when mixed oil or water, forms paint.

Extenders: – In painting, a substance, which is usually an inert material, added to paint to give it body or serve as an adulterating medium.

Vehicle: – In painting, the liquid medium or substance, such as oil, water e.t.c with which a pigment is mixed to form a paint is called a “vehicle”.

Thinner: – A volatile liquid, such as turpentine, used to thin paint in order to make its application easier.

Resin: – Natural wood extract, copal, phenolic and alkyd resin that are synthetically produced are used mostly in decorative paints of today, these are resin.

Drying -oils: – Linseed and many other seed oils produced by processing of the seeds are added to paints to assist drying action.

1.10                                     PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
