The Maritime industry plays a crucial role in Ghana’s economy, and the Regional Maritime University (RMU) is at the forefront of preparing students for careers in this sector. However, while RMU prepares its students with the needed skills and knowledge for a success in the maritime industry, there is the need to improve their career prospects for their students, particularly in joining the Ghana Navy.

This topic is to explore ways to improve career prospects for RMU students by facilitating their transitioning into the Ghana Navy. By examining the current challenges and opportunities, as well as potential strategies for collaboration between the RMU and the Navy, this topic will help create pathways for RMU students to pursue careers in the navy.

This topic will not only improve career prospect for RMU students but to also improve and contribute to the overall development to Ghana’s maritime industry and national security.

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The maritime industry is a vital component of Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to trade, transportation, and national security. The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has been instrumental in preparing students for careers in this industry, offering specialized education and training in maritime-related fields. However, despite the quality education provided by RMU, there is a need to improve career opportunities for its students, particularly in joining the Ghana Navy.

The Ghana Navy plays a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests, including protecting its territorial waters, ensuring maritime security, and contributing to international peacekeeping efforts. As such, there is a demand for skilled and knowledgeable professionals to join the Navy and contributes to its vision and mission.

Through collaboration with RMU and the Ghana Navy, I hope to help create a pathway for RMU students to pursue fulfilling and impactful careers in the Navy. This will not only benefit the individual students but also contribute to the overall capacity and effectiveness of the Navy in fulfilling its mandate.

Despite the quality education and training provided by the Regional Maritime University (RMU), students face challenges in pursuing career opportunities in the Ghana Navy, hindering their ability to contribute their skills and knowledge to the country’s maritime security and national defense.

CHAPTER FIVE

DISCUSSION, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1   Discussion

This discussion derives from a full and concerned appreciation of the prospects of transitioning regional maritime university students into navy. With all indications from these research findings, it is obvious in the table I that we have different types of officers involve in training new officers.

The graduate with Masters were found in sampled school were 18 (18%) while other senior officer were about 38 (38%) and non- senior were 44 constituting the majority. This also reveals that other graduate teachers were more involved in the questionnaire. From the findings, table II shows that we have officers with varied experience spanning between 0 – 8 years with percentage of 37 while with above years 9 years were 63.

This shows that we have enough officers with experience in training graduate.

The data analysed revealed that the result of RMU is more impressive. This is because considering the data in table III out of a particular department sampled in 2005. They means that more students would wish to offer those courses at school level.

The officers’ perception of the problems showed that there is high tendency for intending graduate; this is because the availability of officers, facilities and supportive family members. However, there are problems of inadequate qualified teachers, facilities and textbooks for the graduates during their school days.

5.2   Conclusions

From the finding of this study, the following conclusion could be drawn. But these aims and objectives are not being met going by what was information obtained in the sampled schools. But there is no prospect for its development, other conclusion are:

  1. There is no significant difference with the officers’ perception of the prospect for RMU students transitioning.
  2. There is no significant difference between the unqualified and qualified officers perception at their studying level.
  3. There is no significant difference in less experienced and experienced officers’ perception of the prospect of transitioning.
  4. There is no significant difference between less experience and experienced officers’ perception of the problem of transitioning.

5.3   Recommendations

Based on the findings; the following recommendations are made for effective implementation and transitioning.

  1. Naval officers should employ methods that are suited to the level of students by employing the use of concrete materials to train them.
  2. Government should try and geared up the in service training scheme for training and re-training of officers so that most officers can continue to improve in the knowledge to meet the trend in their career.
  3. Officers on the job should also be giving some incentive to encourage them stay in the job to reduce crime.
  4. Government should also see to shortage of officersas a reason of accepting RMU students.
  5. Also those officers that do not have education background should try and go for some kind of training to make them well equipped with enough knowledge to handle the students.
  6. Government should try to equip the navy training ground and make them functional so that both students and officers can involve in more training aspect.
  7. Government and educational policy maker should try and revisit the issues of over-crowded syllabus and textbooks to review the syllabus and text books in simple languages for better understanding of the subject by both Officers and students.

All these suggestions will help in no small measure in improving the proper implementation of the policy and philosophy of transitioning which will eventually help in improving the performance of students of RMU and Navy officers.
