CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1                                             BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Artificial intelligence has been thought for a long time. In Greek myths Hephaestus created Talus the‘ mechanical man’;a bronze statue with super power that mimics human behavior, in literature Marry Shelly created Frankenstein,in movies Stanley Kubrick created HAL in Space Odyssey by,in addition to thousands of attempts and theories. The concept of AI, like aliens, was science fiction. With the development of computers, AI shifted from being associated with Sci-Fi.Earlycomputerswereconceivedas‘logicalmachines’or‘mechanicalbrains’thathavehumancapabilities such as arithmetic and memory. Due to the rapid progression of technology and after understanding more how the human mind works, the concept of AI has changed. Rather than carrying out complex calculations,AI now focuses on mimicking human behavior.

Therearealreadyvariousattemptstointroduceartificialintelligenttechnologiesintothearchitecturefield(design, management, construction, real estate, urban planning, etc.)Mostofthetechnologiesusedtodayarepartiallyartificiallyintelligent, where it still requires human intervention and monitoring to do the major part of the job. Compared to other fields, the development of AI in architecture is still not widely used and there are a lot of technologies thatarealreadyinthemarketbutarenotimplementedinarchitectureyetinadditiontoevenmoreideasthatareyettobe explored.

1.2                                                   PROBLEM STATEMENT

According to recent research, almost everyone has a different requirement for automation. And most of the work of humans is done by the latest high intelligence computers. It was discovered that rely on Human Intelligence and effort for architectural design take lots of time, energy and sometimes mistakes can also occur. However, Artificial Intelligence can be used to save a lot of time by doing some time-consuming tasks, and we can utilize that time in creating some other designs.

Artificial Intelligence is a high technology mechanical system that can perform any task but needs a few human efforts like visual interpretation or design-making etc. AI works and gives the best results possible by analyzing tons of data, and that’s how it can excel in architecture.

1.3                                                              RESEARCHAIMAND OBJECTIVES

In view of the importance of good design in architectural field, there search aim and objectives are stated below:

Aim

The aim of the study is to assess the impact of artificial intelligence on architecture usingEko Hotel & Suites, Lagos as the case study.

Objectives of the study

The objectives of the study are to:

  1. Describe the importance of artificial intelligence on architecture
  2. Analyse how artificial intelligence can be used to change architecture.

1.4                              SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work will throw more light on the need for using artificial intelligence on architecture. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all those who are into architectural design and building construction.

This study would also help the author of this studyin acquiring more knowledge that will be useful in practice.

1.5                             SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study, essentially, is an exploration of the ways that “Artificial Intelligence” techniques may support systematic and rational architectural design and, by extension, the “Building Systems” process. The motivation for working in this area of research stems from the serious need to develop a new methodological design approach for architects. Given the fact that computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) in particular, is an evolving domain for problem solving techniques, it is believed that it could be a comprehensive tool for achieving that goal. Thus, this thesis describes a generic design methodology using intelligent computers, that may eventually help generate a new approach to architectural design, and assist in the development of new building technologies. This research traces two discrete, but related, concerns: the questioning of the nature of the architectural design paradigm, and the applications of artificial intelligence technology in architecture, both discussed within the context of design automation, where their common ground is establishing a thinking model of how to approach a problem

1.6                                                  LIMITATION OF STUDY

As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  • Time Constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.7                                                  PROJECT JUSTIFICATION

While creating new designs, architects usually go through past designs and the data prepared throughout the making of the building. Instead of investing a lot of time and energy to create something new, it is alleged that a computer will be able to analyze the data in a short time period and will give recommendations accordingly. With this, an architect will be able to do testing and research simultaneously and sometimes even without pen and paper. It seems like it will lead to the organizations or the clients to revert to computers for master plans and construction.
