design and implementation of a smart device that counts the number of people inside a conference hall

This work composes of two sensors. If the sensor 1 is interrupted first then the microcontroller will look for the sensor 2, and if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will increment the count and switch on the relay, if it is first time interrupted.  If the sensor 2 is interrupted first then the microcontroller will look for the sensor 1, and if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will decrement the count.  When the last person leaves the conference hall then counter goes to 0 and that time the relay will turn off.

Description

ABSTRACT

All conference halls are built with a capacity which determines the number of people it can contain at any point in time. This number of people is counted by conference halls officials which takes too much of times and energy to do so. In other to solve this problem, a digital batch counter was designed. This Project ―” industrial batch counter” is a reliable circuit that takes over the task of counting number of conference halls entering the garage very accurately. When someone enters into the conference halls then the counter is incremented and when one leaves the conference halls then the counter is decremented. The total number of people inside the conference halls is also displayed on the seven segment displays. The microcontroller does the above job. It receives the signals from the sensors, and this signal is operated under the control of software which is stored in ROM. Arduino microcontroller continuously monitor the Infrared Receivers. When any object pass through the IR Receiver’s then the IR Rays falling on the receivers are obstructed. This obstruction is sensed by the Microcontroller.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

An industrial digital batch counter is an electronic that handles the counting and controls the number of object such as human being entering the conference hall and display the output on LCD display. The technique involved in the design is a simple sensor unit that senses when one obstruct the light path. These parameters can be used to determine when someone have moved in or out of the garage. The light sensing type involves monitoring the unit with photon or optical devices; this consists of the encoder (transmission path or the source of energy) and the decoder (receiver unit that converts the light intensity to electrical signal). An LED emitter, combined with a photo detector (Light Dependent Resistor, photo transistor or infrared sensing diode) in proximity, form a very useful object called opto-coupler or opto-isolator. When the opto coupler is obstructed, the door opens and the display shows an increase or decrease of people (depending on the path followed). This project report creates a greater picture of the industrial digital batch counter.

1.2                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This Project is a reliable circuit that takes over the task of counting number of people in the garage or human entering into a room very accurately. When car enters into the garage then the counter is counted by the interference of the circuit. The total number of persons inside the room is also displayed on the LCD displays. The microcontroller does the above job. It receives the signals from the sensors, and this signal is operated under the control of software which is stored in ROM. Microcontroller AT89S52 continuously monitor the Infrared Receivers, When any object pass through the IR Receiver’s then the IR Rays falling on the receiver are obstructed , this obstruction is sensed by the Microcontroller.

1.3                                  AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The aim of this project is to build an industrial batch counter. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To build the system prototype.
  2. To demonstrate a smart device that counts the number of people entering the garage
  • To prevents people from entering once the garage has reached its capacity

1.4                                         JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

The need for counting the number of people inside the conference hall is for statistical record, which will help the garage management take a proper account of people; and as well, control the garage capacity from being over populated.

1.5                                             THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This project covers the features of the capacity monitor, the hardware description, the use of transistor, LCD and microcontroller, how the system works and its applications.

1.6                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

This device has applications such as for Batch Control, Rate Indication and Totalization processes. This device offers users an up or down totalizer

1.7                                                 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This work composes of two sensors. If the sensor 1 is interrupted first then the microcontroller will look for the sensor 2, and if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will increment the count and switch on the relay, if it is first time interrupted.  If the sensor 2 is interrupted first then the microcontroller will look for the sensor 1, and if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will decrement the count.  When the last person leaves the conference hall then counter goes to 0 and that time the relay will turn off.

  • PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

This project report is organized into five chapters. The first chapter covers the introduction, aim scope and justification of the project. The second chapter talks about the technology behind the project, the description of the microcontroller, as well as the working principle of the project. Chapter three covers the methodology of the project. Chapter four discusses the designing and construction of the project, as well as other components used in designing this project. Chapter four also talks about the testing of the individual components and packaging of the project. And lastly, chapter five summarizes and concludes the project.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.1                                                           CONCLUSION

At the end of this work, a digital batch counter was constructed. Often we see digital batch counter at conference hall, stadium, mall, etc. How they count the number of people entering and leaving the stadium or conference hall.

This counter can count human beings in both directions. This circuit can be used to count the number of people entering a conference hall in the entrance gate and it can count the number of people leaving the hall by decrementing the count at same gate or exit gate and it depends upon sensor placement in conference hall gate. It can also be used at gates of parking areas and other public places.

5.2                                                    RECOMMENDATION

Digital batch counter apart from using it in conference hall I recommend that this device  be used in various places like seminar hall, worship centres where the capacity of room is limited and should not be exceeded for counting the number of people entering and leaving the place. Project will display actual number of persons inside the room.
