design and construction of a power-on reminder with led lamp

The main aim of this work is to build a device that will call attention of the user in a predetermined time via alarm and LED display whenever a machine or instrument is left ON. The objectives of the work are:

  1. To build a power-on reminder at low cost.
  2. To save devices from damages.
  • To indicate when mains power fails

Description

ABSTRACT

Many a time equipment at workstations remains switched on unnoticed. In this situation, these may get damaged due to overheating. Here is an add-on device for the workbench power supply that reminds you of the power-on status of the connected devices every hour or so by sounding a buzzer for around 20 seconds. It also has a white LED that provides good enough light to locate objects when mains fails.

The circuit was built around an IC NE555 (IC1) which is wired as an astable multivibrator, whose time period is set to around six minutes using resistors R1 and R2, preset VR1 and capacitor C1 for sounding the buzzer every hour.

1.0      INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Overheating is a phenomenon of rising temperatures in an electrical circuit. Overheating causes damage to the circuit components and can cause fire, explosion, and injury. Damage caused by overheating is usually irreversible; the only way to repair it is to replace some components.

Too much of anything can be bad for you. This holds true even in terms of your home appliances. If you use your appliances too much then you could wear them down and reduce their lifespan.

A clear indication of this is when your appliances overheat. Overheating is a major warning sign that something isn’t right with your appliance.

Many a times equipment at workstations remains switched on unnoticed. In this situation, these may cause damages to appliances due to overheating and power fluctuation. In other to solve this problem, this device was built. This device is  for the workbench power supply that reminds you of the power-on status of the connected devices every hour or so by sounding a buzzer for around 20 seconds. It also has a white LED that provides good enough light to locate objects when a main fails.

1.2      AIM OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this work is to build a device that will call attention of the user in a predetermined time via alarm and LED display whenever a machine or instrument is left ON. The objectives of the work are:

  1. To build a power-on reminder at low cost.
  2. To save devices from damages.
  • To indicate when mains power fails

1.4      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

This work will help the user to understand the need of having power supply indicator. To the student involved, this work will help him to understand how 555 timer or CD4017 are configured.

1.5      PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

To purpose of this work is to create awareness to the user of the presence of power-on of a device.

1.6      APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

This device can be used in places such as:

  1. Office,
  2. Workshop
  • Industries, etc.

1.7      ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT

This device was built with cheap and available components which can easily buy from any electronics shop.
1.8                                         METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. Design of the device was carried out.
  2. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  3. Construction of the circuit was carried out. The construction of this project includes the placing of components on Vero boards, soldering and connection of components,
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.9                          PROJECT WORK ORGANIZATION

The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:

Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to power-on reminder.Chapter two is on literature review of the study. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.

Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.

Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.
