Description

ABSTRACT

Solar tracker positions an object at an angle relative to the Sun. The most-common applications for solar trackers are positioning photovoltaic (PV) panels (solar panels) so that they remain perpendicular to the Sun’s rays and positioning space telescopes so that they can determine the Sun’s direction. PV solar trackers adjust the direction that a solar panel is facing according to the position of the Sun in the sky. By keeping the panel perpendicular to the Sun, more sunlight strikes the solar panel, less light is reflected, and more energy is absorbed. The aim of this work is to study the advantages and disadvantages of a solar tracking system.

1.1                                         BACKGROUNG OF THE PROJECT

In nowadays epoch, the main problem the world is facing especially African countries is energy catastrophes and we all know that fossil fuels are available in very inadequate quantity. Likewise there overdo in the previous years has abridged them more. Therefore, now if we want to meet our energy demands in this world, the only option we are left with is to exploit the renewable resources of energy that are accessible in copiousness. In this world nowadays, there are numerous sources of renewable energy such as the sun, wind, and geothermal but the most cost-effective among this renewable energy is solar energy. This solar energy cannot only meet our current energy hassles but can also provide us with cheap and clean energy. The solar panels once installed can give us energy for numerous years without having any or much maintenance cost (Serhan et al., 2010).

Sun changes its position throughout the days, years and seasons. To increase the energy production from PV panels, it is necessary to rotate the PV panels accordingly. It can be realized that more power will be generated it PV panel is exposed (for more time) towards the sun, so they can harness more sunlight.

A photovoltaic solar tracker is a mechanical device to rotate PV panels to achieve an optimal angle concerning the sun’s rays The greater the perpendicular alignment with the sun’s rays, the greater the efficiency. For this reason, installing solar panels with a photovoltaic tracker improves the performance of the electrical energy output (Serhan et al., 2010).

PV modules mounted on a tracker system are usually arranged in a single panel. In this way, the number of photovoltaic trackers in solar installations can be reduced.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Solar trackers are rising in popularity, but not everyone understands the complete advantages and potential drawbacks of the system. Solar panel tracking solutions are a more advanced technology for mounting photovoltaic panels.

This study was carried to help the reader understand the advantages and disadvantages of solar tracking system.

1.3      Aim and Objectives of the study

The main aim of this work is to study the advantages and disadvantages of a solar tracking system.

Objectives of the study are:

  1. To become familiar with solar tracking system
  2. To understand the need for solar tracking system
  • To carefully analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a solar tracking system.

1.4      Scope of the study

Solar module tracking systems are a type of mechanical racking that typically utilize motorized components.  The goal is to maximize the amount of energy that is collected by the arrays during the day. The scope of this work covers discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this type of system.

1.5      Significance of the study

This study will serve as a mean of helping users of solar tracker understanding the advantages and disadvantages of solar tracker before going into it.

CHAPTER FIVE

Conclusion

This research presents an overview of advantages and disadvantages of solar tracking systems in the world nowadays and it highlights the enactment scrutiny of both the single and dual-axis solar tracking systems fortified with diverse techniques and designs, which have been developed in recent years. The research is also very helpful in the supply of electricity in both urban and rural areas, where we might use very high sensitive solar panels which can work in warm sunlight also by connecting several solar tracker assemblies we will be able to produce an adequately large amount of electricity. We can make use of solar panels in our day to day life for street lighting, mobile phone chargers, water heaters, etc. Solar radiation Tracker has played a vital role in increasing the efficiency of solar panels in recent years, thus proving to be a better technological achievement. We have also seen the importance of dual and single solar trackers. The dual-axis solar tracker lies in its better effectiveness and sustainability to give better output of electricity compared to a single axis solar tracking system. The tracking system is designed such that it can trap solar energy in all possible directions. The dual-axis solar tracking systems generally prove to be more resourceful than the single-axis solar tracking system.

Recommendation

We have also seen the impact of installing the solar tracking system and its challenges. I recommend that more research should be carried out on the same topic in other to have more knowledge about solar tracker.
