CHAPTER ONE
- INTRODUCTION
I was introduced to every staff and apprentice of the institute. I was also shown the entire department in the institute which includes the sale office, cyber café, classroom, computer engineering by the director of the institute and finally I was introduced to the SIWES coordinator of the institute.
The coordinator encouraged me to be hard working during my 4 months (16 weeks) training in the institute, for me to able to learn much.
1.1 DEFINITION OF SIWES
SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme) is a program that affects all tertiary institution like Universities, polytechnics and colleges of education which is either own by federal government, state government or private sector. Students which are studying science related courses must undergo at least two month (12 weeks) to acquire more practical knowledge in their chosen profession. It is aimed at exposing student to machines and equipment that the way to blend with industrial activities and the safety guard and effective working area. The scheme is tripartite program involving the student, the polytechnic and industry.
1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The aim of the industrial training program undertake in different place are stated below:-
- To expose student into work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the polytechnic.
- Prepare students for work situation they are likely to meet after graduation
- Make the transition from university of the world of the work easier and thus enhance student contact of later job placement.
- To develop in the students more skill on their various discipline as the activity participate in the activities on the site attachment.
- Provide an avenue for students in Nigeria polytechnic to acquire industrial skill in their course of study.
