Description

ABSTRACT

E-learning is an emerging field as a promising instructional medium as well as a ripe arena in which to conduct research on its impact on teaching and learning activities. The fundamental nature of e-learning as an instructional medium differs substantially from face-to-face delivery, thereby requiring more new features for course development, online assessment and interaction. Moodle is a software package for producing internet-based courses and websites. It is a  Learning Management System (LMS) that allows better cooperation among learners, tutors and students. In this paper we explore the implementation of effective e-learning through moodle and also present how the various facilities of Moodle are used by tutors to provide interactive and stimulating learning experiences in providing higher education in various colleges of technology.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                       INTRODUCTION

E-learning is a process of education in electronic form through Internet network or the Intranet with the use of management system for education. Broadly there are two approaches generally seen in e-Learning. Asynchronous e-learning commonly facilitated by media such as e-mail and discussion boards supports work relations among learners and with tutors, even when participants cannot be online at the same time. It is a key component of flexible e-learning. In fact, many people take online courses because of their asynchronous nature, combining education with work, family and other commitments. Asynchronous e-learning makes it possible for learners to log on to an e-learning environment at any time and download documents or send messages to tutors or peers. Students may spend more time refining their contributions, which are generally considered more thoughtful compared to synchronous communication.

Synchronous e-learning, commonly supported by media such as video conferencing and chat, has the potential to support learners in the development of learning communities. Learners and tutors experience synchronous e-learning as more social and avoid frustration by asking and answering questions in real time. Synchronous session help learners feel like participants rather than isolates.

The process of e-Learning can be represented in the following e-Learning cycle model. The learning manager analyses the learner’s present skills and skills that are set as a learning goal, and obtains the necessary material information. The manager then searches for the related material.

  • Material development. The developer creates the material outline structure and exercise questions. The material structure is linked with explanatory pages.
  • The learner engages in learning that is suited to the need, that is, individual learning for knowledge acquisition, or collaborative learning for workshop-type learning.
  • The learner carries out exercises and takes examinations using questions designed according to the learning goal. The learning manager makes the evaluation of each learner, using results of exercises and examinations.

There are two types of free platforms for online learning. First, there are those hosted on a public site and the user just signs up and uses the platform, but the platform “lives” on a server somewhere in cyberspace. The second type of platform is that that must be downloaded, saved and hosted on the user’s own server. The free online class platforms that must be hosted on your own server are “open source applications” [1]. This means that the software is available free for limited use under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). This basically means that the user can copy it, distribute it, even charge for it, but cannot get patents on it. Also, the source code must always remain open and available for viewing by anyone looking at the site so that it does not become proprietary.

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Following the trend of IT movement, e-learning has been promoted in the education system. The development of e-learning has enriched the teaching materials on the Internet, which have made learning activities more enjoyable for students in primary schools.

Despite this trend of e-learning, there has not been enough websites designed for learning. Therefore, we developed an e-learning system which is targeted on students in primary schools. After consulting with school teachers to identify the needs of teaching activities, we designed our e-learning platform as a teaching tool for assisting learning. In addition, the platform could be used after class so that students were able to do more practices after class.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Attending school, lesson, class or meeting from a distance is always a big problem more especially when it involves moving from one state to another or from one country to another. The physical or one-on-one learning is cost efficient and also exposes one to some level of risk. E-learning using moodle has also become easier to access online lesson content and interactive, electronic applications or tools from any- where, at anytime.

1.3                                              OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

In this research, we built an e-learning platform by using Moodle. This platform was designed to assist students to improve their learning. The learning materials, including listening, speaking, reading and writing, were presented in terms of multimedia. By using the online community, students were encouraged to study more, therefore reducing the teaching burden of teachers.

Teachers regularly provided supplementary materials, which were uploaded to the platform to increase students’ interest in learning.

The Moodle platform could be used to trace the records of students’ learning activities and achievement. The platform was also the main resource for the after-class practices.

1.4                                                   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

E-learning is an educational approach that combines different types of multimedia technologies to ensure better education experiences for students and teachers. This course introduces different e-learning environments and e-learning tools and explores ways learning theories can be applied in e-learning design. By the end of this course, you’ll have the ability to design a blended or online learning environment with modules for learning content aimed at different target groups.

1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The e-learning method allows teachers and educators to provide educational materials and the related knowledge to a wide-range of learners by using more effective and efficient communication channels. In a typical e-learning scenario, learners are not required to attend classrooms to follow face-to-face lecture parts of the given courses. Rather, they are enabled to join special course sessions and to establish contact with other learners or teachers via some advanced tools. All of these activities are performed with the support of the conventional or modern telecommunication infrastructure.

1.6                                          APPLICATION OF THE STUDY

The use of this technology is used by educators, business men and learners

1.7                                             LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

There are different software used for e-learning but in this work we are focusing on using moodle software in e-learning.

1.8                                                         PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied,  chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
