Description
ABSTRACT
Ambient Noise pollution studies have been carried out within the Physics Lab in Delta State University, Abraka using Matlab. Noise measurements were taken from Physics Lab during working hours as from 8.00am. The noise levels from theLab were taken four times each at a period (time) of ten minutes interval before the average and percentageswerecalculated.
The result indicate that the average noise level of 87 Db in Physics Lab is mostly generated by the business centers as aresult of the electricity generated from different power plants, which is attributed to the frequent power failures bythe Power Holdings of Nigeria. In addition, offices using smallgenerators from a pole interval to another withvoices in and out contribute a lot to the noisy environment. The measured noise levels when compare with theexposure limits of 75 Db summarized and recommended by both WHO (2010).

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Noise is defined as any unwanted signal and in most cases the signal is nothing but sound. The extent to which noise isannoying depends on many factors such as the pitch irregularities, duration, rhythm and unexpectedness or whether thenoisehasany meaning for the particular observer (Ebeniroet al.,2019).
Noiseaspollutionissaidtooccurwhenthenoiselevelisabovethemaximumpermissiblelevelforagivenenvironment (WHO, 2010). It is also defined as the addition of sound to the environment beyond the natural sources and measured in intensity, duration and frequency of occurrence (Miller 2019). Noise as a polluting agent in the environment has been recognized for some time as a serious threat to the quality of life enjoyed by the populace (Abumere etal 2019). The most important measurement of ambient noise is its loudness. This loudness depends on the physical sound pressure that is measured on the sensitivity of the human ear to it. The sensitivity of the human ear depend son the frequency of the sound(Levitt2011).
Some of the ways to reduce noise in an area includes putting on hearing aids (Levitt 2011), the use of exhaust silence rand planting of trees and shrubs in front of buildings (Burgliarelo, 2016). Noise has been proved to contribute to the decrease in working efficiency and an increase in the ability to make mistakes (Olawepo 2011).
The inefficiency of the Power Holdings of Nigeria to render electricity supply has led to the massive use ofgenerators by the Physics Lab blocks as well as most other departmental offices, faculties and other permanent structures used for business centers. The sound emanating from these generators constitutes noise and nuisanceduring school hours. It is thus in this end that an investigation was carried out on the ambient noise generatedwithinthe studyarea.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
A comfortable environment is one in which there is little or no annoyance and distraction so that working or leisuretasks can be carried out unhindered either physically or mentally. Unfortunately, environmental noise has become aseriousprobleminmanycountries, and itisdifficultto regulatebyphysicalmeansalone(Onuu, 2010).
It has been a very serious concern in the Campus where generating plants of various designs and sizes are foundclose to the physics Lab resultinginhigh noise levels.Thiskind ofnoisebotherspeopleveryseriouslyinthephysics Lab, making those in the lab not to concentrate.
It is well known that environmental noise may affect sleep, conversation, academic work in terms of reading and learning, and cause annoyance as well as affect task performance.
A lot of social surveys on the effects of noise on people have been conducted throughout the world especially in Europe and Northern America with moderate climate. Research and analysis of the difference caused by climate(Kryter,2015)has been conducted in Nigeria. This study was carried out to investigate the ambient noise within the physics lab in Niger Delta University using matlab tools
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main aim of this seminar is to investigate the ambient noise within the physics lab in Niger Delta University using matlab tools.
The objectives of this work are:
- To determine the ambient noise level within the physics lab in Niger Delta University using matlab tools
- To maintain good health by ensuring that the ambient noise level is not more than the exposure limits summarized by WHO.
- To ensure a conducive environment for physics lab users.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will serve as a means of ensuring that ambient noise level is not within the permissible limit in other to ensure good health among the users of the physics lab.
The study will also serve as a means of becoming familiar with MATLAB tool, and also a means of ensuring good health of those in the Physics Lab.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work covers studying the Ambient Noise level within the Physics Lab in Delta State University, Abraka using MATLAB. Noise measurements were taken from Physics Lab during working hours.
