Description

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A programmable logic computer (PLC) is an industrial digital computer that is generally used to control the process. As it is an industrial computer, a logical program to control the process is prepared in the general computer.

Then this program is transferred to the PLC using cables. This program is stored in the PLC memory.

The logical program is prepared using a programming language called Ladder logic, Statement List, or Functional block diagram. A program is prepared in such a way that the peoples with electrical or instrumentation background can easily understand.

A Programmable Logic Controller consists of various inputs and outputs modules. A PLC monitors the status of switches and sensors using input terminals and based on this status they will give the command to the output devices through the output terminals.

PLCs were first developed in the automobile manufacturing industry to provide flexible, rugged and easily programmable controllers to replace hard-wired relay logic systems. Since then, they have been widely adopted as high-reliability automation controllers suitable for harsh environments.

Since PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) was firstly introduced in 1970 , it has been widely applied to various industrial uses such as machine and process controls. Designed with the latest microprocessor and electronic circuitry, today’s compact-size PLCs feature high level of reliability, performance, speed and networking. The use of PLCs in automated production lines improves system reliability, product quality, information sharing, efficiency and flexibility and thus reduces costs. PLC-310 is a self-contained trainer which consists of a MITSUBISHI PLC main unit, I/O devices for simulation and I/O devices that are commonly used. It provides students with a thorough understanding of the theories and applications of programmable logic controllers. This trainer enables students to learn step by step the fundamentals of PLC and more advanced controls used in industry. This work is aimed at building a Mitsubishi compact fx2n 32mr PLC trainer kit.

1.2                                                    PROJECT MOTIVATION

It is of great importance in lab of any institution to offer students a high level education regarding digital electronics. It is a great essence in technology learning platform. Circuit board can be touched and the component. With trainer kit students will be able to learn step by step the fundamentals of PLC and more advanced controls used in industry

1.3                                           PROJECT AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The main aim of this work is to setup a Mitsubishi compact fx2n 32mr PLC trainer kit (for batch control of a level tank). The objectives are:

  1. To practically realize the PLC digital circuits.
  2. To build a hardware prototype of the PLC trainer kit for educational experimental
  • To provide knowledge about components and also verify the theoretical knowledge of PLC
